Winnipeg’s Pro Women’s Soccer Team Finally Has a Name
Back in July, Winnipeg got its very own professional women’s soccer team, the first one in Manitoba. Since then, fans have had one big question: what would it be called?
On Wednesday, we got our answer. Meet Winnipeg Ember FC.
The team revealed its name, crest and colours at The Forks, and there’s a lot of Manitoba pride in the design.
Here’s what’s behind it:
The name: Ember comes from the warm glow of the prairie sky at sunrise and sunset.
The crest: It features a spark and a sundog, the bright spot of light you sometimes see beside the sun on cold days.
The motto: “Let Them Howl” was made for fans to shout from the stands.
And the team is already taking shape. Nearly 100 players have signed up for tryouts this weekend, and the first season kicks off in 2027 at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.
For girls growing up under that same prairie sky, it’s a team to cheer for, and maybe one day, to play for.

Eyes Watery, Itchy or Blurry? Here’s What Might Be Going On
Your eyes water when you’re reading. They itch by the afternoon. And some days, everything looks a little blurry, even with your glasses on.
Maybe you even got a new prescription. But, it didn’t help.
It sounds backwards, but watery eyes are often a sign of dry eye. When your eyes’ natural tear layer isn’t doing its job, they get irritated and water more to make up for it.
And winter’s dry indoor air usually makes it worse. Eye drops help for an hour. Then you’re back where you started.
Academy Optical treats dry eye at the source, with in-office treatments that help your eyes make better tears on their own.
And right now, Winnipeg Digest readers get a $198 bonus when they book.
Sound familiar?
Watery eyes, especially when reading or in the wind
Itchy or burning eyes by the end of the day
Blurry vision that comes and goes
New glasses, but things still aren’t clear
Start with a free consultation to find out what’s causing it.
Here’s your bonus: book a treatment, and you’ll also get a free eyelid cleaning, normally $198. It clears away makeup, oils and bacteria along your lash line that can make dry eye worse.
Winter’s only getting drier. Book now, and finally see clearly again.

The Jets Just Made NHL History
Tuesday night in Montreal turned into one of the most unforgettable games in Jets history.
Down 4-0 with 2:39 left, the Jets kept pushing, and in just over two minutes, they scored four goals to force overtime. Then they finished the job, beating the Canadiens 5-4 and snapping a nine-game winless streak along the way.
Here’s how it went down:
Tyrel Bauer scored his first NHL goal to start it, and Morgan Barron added another 42 seconds later.
Kyle Connor scored twice in 27 seconds, tying it with 33 seconds left.
Dylan Samberg sealed it at 3:30 into overtime.
It’s a comeback no NHL team had ever pulled off. Teams down four or more goals in the final three minutes now have a 1-10,300 record, and that one win belongs to Winnipeg.
If you turned the game off early, you’re going to want to see this one.

10 Cozy Winnipeg Bakeries to Try This Winter

Winnipeg winters are long, but they do come with one perk: the perfect excuse to warm up with a fresh pastry and a hot coffee.
Luckily, Winnipeg is full of cozy bakeries to warm up in, so we put together a guide to 10 of our favourites for the season ahead.
A few to get you started:
Gato Bakeshop on Sargent changes its cronut flavours every week, so it’s worth getting there early.
Tall Grass Prairie Bread Co. makes its cinnamon rolls fresh all day long.
Honey Bunny Pastry Shop on Corydon has plenty of celiac-friendly options, along with favourites like honey cake and pistachio tiramisu.
Hildegard’s Bakery on Portage serves wood-fired pizza on Fridays and Saturdays, in a cozy space full of plants and fairy lights.
The other six are in our full guide, from flaky croissants to fresh loaves you’ll want to bring home.
Winter might be long, but with a warm pastry, a hot coffee and someone you love across the table, it goes by a little sweeter.
P.S. Winnipeg has countless great bakeries, and we know we couldn’t fit them all. Comment your favourite on our post, and it might just make our part two!
City Updates
Hundreds of New Jobs Are Coming to Winnipeg’s Airport

Source: WestJet
Winnipeg’s airport is about to become a lot more than a place to catch a flight, starting with a brand-new business park on its west side called AirLink.
WestJet plans to be its first big tenant, with a new maintenance hangar where its planes can be serviced and repaired. If the airline’s board gives the final OK, it’s set to open in late 2028.
Here’s what the hangar could mean for Winnipeg:
Up to 42 WestJet planes could be based here.
It’s expected to bring hundreds of jobs, including about 50 aircraft maintenance engineers.
More planes in the city could mean more flights from Winnipeg.
And that’s just the start. Once AirLink is fully built, it’s expected to create more than 2,700 jobs.
For a lot of Manitobans, that means more chances to build a great career without ever leaving home.
Manitoba RCMP Issues a Warning About Fake Police Calls
It’s never a good feeling to see the police calling, and that’s exactly what scammers are counting on.
Manitoba RCMP has received several reports of scammers faking its phone numbers. The caller usually says there’s been suspicious activity under your name, then tries to get you to share passwords or banking details, or to click a link.
They may also try:
Sending a fake notice about court papers being delivered.
Claiming you’ve committed a serious crime.
Asking for money to bail a loved one out of jail.
If you get a call like this, don’t share anything personal. Hang up, look up your local RCMP office’s real number and call them directly.
And if you’ve got parents or grandparents who might pick up a call like this, give them a heads-up too. A quick conversation now could save them a lot of worry later.
