Winnipeg’s First Outdoor NHL Game in 10 Years Will Look Like a Giant Cabin

This Sunday, Oct. 25, Princess Auto Stadium won’t look much like a football stadium. It’ll look more like a winter weekend at the lake.

For the 2026 Heritage Classic, the NHL is turning the field into a giant Canadian cabin retreat as the Jets take on the Canadiens, all as a tribute to outdoor hockey and the way Canadians spend their winters.

And they’re going all out on the details:

  • Giant wooden logs will circle the rink, so it feels like you’re inside a massive cabin.

  • A glowing stone fireplace will feature oversized skates for both teams.

  • Vintage jerseys, team crests and hockey memorabilia will be spread across the field.

  • Four stages will keep the live music going.

But for a lot of Jets fans, the moment that sticks might not be the field at all.

A special tribute will mark 15 years since the Jets came back to Winnipeg, with 18 former players taking part, including fan favourites Dustin Byfuglien, Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler.

It’s a nod to cabin weekends, frozen lakes and backyard rinks, and there’s no better place to celebrate all of it than right here at home.

Winnipeg Is Getting Halloween Fireworks This Week

Fireworks are usually a summer thing. Canada Day, a packed crowd, and a little one asleep on your shoulder long before the first one goes off.

This Halloween, they’re back, and this time the kids will actually be awake to see them.

Witchy Wonderland opens this Thursday at Red River Exhibition Park, a not-so-scary Halloween made for families with young kids. And on select nights, it all ends with fireworks.

Before the sky lights up, there’s plenty to do:

  • Boo-Bounce, Winnipeg’s largest inflatable park, with 11 attractions

  • A Halloween train through the Tunnel of Terror, more giggles than goosebumps

  • Farm animals, performers and costumed characters to meet

  • The Electric Cauldron, a dance party with lights and music

Costumes are encouraged. One ticket covers almost everything, $20 for ages 3 and up, and free for kids 2 and under. Plus free parking and a free shuttle from Unicity.

Fireworks only happen on a few nights, so check which ones before you pick your date. Then bundle up, grab a spot, and watch the kids’ faces when the sky lights up.

It’s the kind of Halloween they’ll still be talking about on the drive home.

Local Artists and Creators Can Earn $16,000 Teaching at the Library

Winnipeg Public Library is looking for two local artists and creators to teach what they love in 2027, whether that’s art, technology, digital media, or another creative skill.

It’s part of the Maker-in-Residence program, and each spot comes with a $16,000 stipend for an 18-week residency at the ideaMILL in Millennium Library.

One runs from February to June, and the other from August to December.

Here’s what it involves:

  • It’s about 18 hours a week, with drop-in studio hours three times a week.

  • Makers lead at least five workshops, plus an introductory one.

  • There’s up to $2,500 for supplies, plus equipment and staff support.

It’s the kind of role where a teenager finally tries the thing they’ve been curious about, or a retiree picks up a brand-new skill, and you get to be the one who shows them how.

Applications close Nov. 9. If this sounds like you or someone you know, it’s a chance to turn a passion into something the whole city gets to learn from.

City Updates

Winnipeggers Are Voting Early in Record Numbers

More than 25,000 Winnipeggers have already voted, and election day is still a week away.

That’s a new record for this point in advance voting. St. Vital Centre was especially busy last Friday, with 1,879 people voting there in a single day.

If you haven’t voted yet, there’s still time:

  • Community advance voting runs until Oct. 22, from 4 PM to 8 PM, in all 15 wards.

  • City Hall voting runs until Oct. 23, mostly from 9 AM to 4 PM, with longer hours on Thursday.

  • Election day is Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Before you head out, bring your voter notice if you have one, and check what ID you’ll need.

Winnipeg is already off to a record start. Let’s see how high we can push it.

Two Winnipeg Concerts Go on Sale This Week

One is a Winnipeg holiday tradition. The other is a rising star who built her following without a major label.

Both were just added to the Burton Cummings Theatre’s calendar, and tickets go on sale this week.

Some shows become part of how a city does December, and JP Hoe’s Hoe Hoe Hoe Holiday Show is one of ours.

For its 20th year, it’s growing to two nights, Friday, Dec. 11 and Saturday, Dec. 12, so there are more seats to go around and it’s easier to bring everyone on your list. Expect JP Hoe’s music, special guests and plenty of holiday spirit.

🎟️ On sale Thursday, Oct. 22 at 10 AM

And if your playlist leans a little newer, Ruby Waters brings The Suppression Tour to the same stage on Thursday, April 1, 2027.

She’s passed 120 million streams as an independent artist and earned two JUNO nominations along the way. Expect fan favourites like “Wet T-Shirt” and “Blinders,” plus her newest single, “6 Feet Under.”

🎟️ On sale Friday, Oct. 23 at 10 AM

Set a 10 AM alarm for both mornings, and you could be the one telling the group chat you got seats.

Here’s How to Pay $0 for Your Next Dental Cleaning

You’ve got dental coverage, so you’d think a cleaning wouldn’t cost you anything.

Then the bill shows up. Your plan covered most of it, and you’re stuck paying the rest.

For some people, that leftover is a lot. And even when it’s small, it’s one more reason to push your next cleaning back a few months.

That’s the part Dental Dreams takes care of. Right now, for new patients, they’ll cover whatever your plan doesn’t, so you pay $0 out of pocket.

A cleaning, full checkup and X-rays typically cost about $400. If your plan covers 80 per cent, you’d still owe $80.

Dental Dreams covers that $80, so there’s nothing left for you to pay.

The offer is only valid if you:

  • Book your visit by Sunday, Oct. 25.

  • Have your visit before Thursday, Nov. 12.

That’s five days to book, counting today. After that, it’s back to paying the leftover yourself.

When you call, mention the new patient welcome package so the team knows what you’re booking.

And if you’ve been thinking about switching dentists, this is the easiest way to try a new one, with no surprise bill at the end.
