Winnipeg’s Biggest Sewage Plant Is Getting $500M
Your kitchen sink and Lake Winnipeg are more connected than you'd think.
Everything you rinse down the drain gets cleaned at a sewage plant before it flows on toward the lake, and in Winnipeg, most of it goes to the North End sewage plant.
That plant has been getting upgraded in phases, and the final phase now has the money it needs. The federal government is putting $500 million toward it, with the province and the city each covering about a third of the $1.5 billion cost.
The upgrade will:
Remove more phosphorus, which feeds the algae blooms in Lake Winnipeg.
Make room for more new homes as the city grows.
Help keep bills in check, and the mayor says it means water and sewer rates can be frozen in 2027.
If all goes to plan, the work will wrap up by 2032. It's a big, behind-the-scenes job, but it means a lot less of what goes down our sinks will end up in the lake we love.

Restaurant of the Week: Bamboo Boi

Asian Sweets With a Twist…
If you grew up with pandan, matcha or Vietnamese coffee, you'll recognize a lot on BambooBoi's menu, just not quite the way you remember it. And if you didn't, it's a pretty great place to start.
BambooBoi is a cozy café on Henderson Highway known for its custom cakes, from fluffy chiffon to delicate jelly.
But the everyday menu is where the twist really shows, with fresh pastries, creamy desserts and colourful drinks that lean not-too-sweet.
A few of the best sellers:
The Matcha Lava Croissant is buttery and flaky on the outside, with matcha cream waiting inside.
The Singapore Tofu is silky and soft, served with pandan jelly. Pandan is a leaf with a sweet, vanilla-like flavour.
The Salted Cloud Vietnamese Coffee pairs strong coffee with a layer of salted cream, so every sip is a little salty and a lot bold.
Whether it tastes like home or something brand new, it's worth the trip down Henderson.
📍 163 Henderson Hwy.

Winnipeg's Yard Waste Pickup Ends This Month

Source: Prairie Containers
If you've still got pumpkins on the doorstep or leaves in the yard, there are only a few weeks left to put them out at the curb.
Winnipeg's curbside yard waste collection ends soon, and your last pickup depends on your area:
Area A: the week of Nov. 16 to 20
Area B: the week of Nov. 23 to 27
Not sure which area you're in? You can check online or call 311.
Pack your leaves and garden waste into paper yard waste bags, cardboard boxes or reusable containers without lids. And yes, Halloween pumpkins can go in too. Just take out any candles and decorations first.
If you miss your last pickup, there are still a few places to drop it off. Otherwise, a weekend or two with the rake and your yard is all set for winter, with no soggy leaves waiting for you in the spring.

It's Time to Test Your Carbon Monoxide Alarms
For years, the time change was our reminder to test the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms at home.
Now that Manitoba doesn't change its clocks, Winnipeg's fire service is asking us to start a new habit, and Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week is a good place to begin.
With the cold setting in, furnaces and fireplaces are working harder, and both can give off carbon monoxide, a gas you can't see or smell. A working alarm is the best way to know it's there.
To keep yours ready, firefighters suggest you:
Test your alarms once a month by holding the test button.
Change the batteries every six months if your alarms use them.
Replace any alarm that's 10 years old or past its expiry date.
If an alarm ever goes off, get everyone outside right away, then call 911.
Pick one day a month, like the first, and testing your alarms will soon become second nature. A few seconds is all it takes to help keep your family safe this winter.

A Last-Minute Comeback Keeps the Blue Bombers’ Season Alive

Source: Winnipeg Blue Bombers
For most of Saturday's East semifinal, it looked like the Blue Bombers' season was about to end.
Then, in the final minutes, Winnipeg came back to beat the Toronto Argonauts 25-22, with backup quarterback Dru Brown and receiver Nic Demski leading the way.
Here's how it happened:
Nick Hallett knocked the ball loose from Toronto's punt returner, giving Winnipeg one more chance.
Brown found Demski for a 23-yard touchdown, and a two-point conversion put them up by three with 44 seconds left.
The defence held on, stopping Toronto from answering.
And just like that, the Blue Bombers are still alive. Next up, they head to Montreal to face the Alouettes in the East Final.
After a season of ups and downs, our boys are still fighting for another Grey Cup.
If you missed the game or just want to relive that final touchdown, we've got the highlights for you below.
