One of Winnipeg's Biggest Nights of the Year is Tomorrow, and It's 100% Free
One Saturday every fall, about 40,000 Winnipeggers stay out late on purpose. That Saturday is tomorrow.
Nuit Blanche is back Saturday, Sept. 26, and for one night, the whole city becomes the gallery. There's art across the Exchange District, downtown, St. Boniface and The Forks, tucked into galleries, local shops, and a few places you'd never think to look.
And every single bit of it is completely free.
Here are a few we'd build our night around:
15-foot-tall inflatables filling Old Market Square
A giant projection lit up across the front of the St. Boniface Cathedral
Acrobatic cyclists and circus performers at the foot of the Esplanade Riel Bridge, 7 to 11:45 PM
"What is Love?" at The Forks' CN Stage, a huge video projection made from acts of love people sent in, where you can write a love note of your own, 6 PM to midnight
Breakdancing, DJ scratching and live painting on The Forks Patio, part of a showcase of Filipino music, art and dance, 6 to 9:30 PM
And that's only a handful. There's plenty more waiting around the next corner, which is honestly the fun of it. You don't need a perfect plan. Pick a starting point and go from there.
Getting around is free too, so leave the car at home:
Free shuttles run between the neighbourhoods all night
A free water bus takes you along the river from 9 PM to midnight, with stops at The Forks, the Exchange, St. Boniface and Corydon/Osborne
Biking? Bring lights and reflectors, since most of this happens after dark
So, get out there tomorrow. Wander the city, see what our local artists have made, and stay out a little later than usual.

The City of Winnipeg Wants to Help Local Writers
Do you know someone who's always writing?
Maybe a friend who's been working on a book for years, a parent putting the family stories down on paper, or a coworker who quietly writes poems on the side.
This one's for them.
For the next seven months, the Winnipeg Public Library is giving Manitoba writers free help from a published author.
It's called the Writer-in-Residence program, and this year's writer is Sally Ito, a poet and translator who teaches creative writing at Canadian Mennonite University.
Starting October 1, writers of any genre can:
Send her their work by email or mail and get her feedback
Sit down with her one-on-one to talk it through
Join her writing workshops
Be part of a writer's circle she'll lead and much more
It doesn't matter if they've published three books or never shown anyone a single page. It's all free, and it runs until April 30, 2027.
So think of that person, and send this their way. A little one-on-one help might be exactly what gets them to the finish line.
The Jets Just Got Their Whole History Back
For a lot of Winnipeggers, the original Jets have always been part of the team's story. As of Thursday, they're officially part of its record book too.
Here's the quick background…
The first Winnipeg Jets played here from 1979 to 1996, then moved to Arizona and became the Coyotes. When the Atlanta Thrashers moved here in 2011 and became today's Jets, all of those original Winnipeg records stayed in Arizona.
That just changed. The Jets and the NHL announced that the team's official history now includes both Winnipeg eras.
It now covers:
The original Winnipeg Jets, from 1979 to 1996
The Atlanta Thrashers, from 1999 to 2011
And today's Jets, from 2011 on
It also brings two original Jets back to the top of the team's all-time records:
Dale Hawerchuk is now the Jets' all-time leader in goals (379) and points (929)
Thomas Steen is now the Jets' all-time leader in assists (553)
It always felt like one team to Winnipeg. And now the record book says so too.

City Updates
A New Place for Future Chefs Is Coming to St. Boniface
Somewhere in St. Boniface right now, there's a teenager who'd rather be in the kitchen than anywhere else. Soon, they'll have a place to turn that into a career, and learn it all in French.
The Manitoba government is putting $3.8 million toward a new French-language culinary arts centre at 170 Marion St. The money covers buying the building and the first round of design work to renovate it.
It'll be run by the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine (DSFM), Manitoba's French-language school division.
Here's what it'll offer:
Hands-on culinary training for francophone high school students, in French
A bigger home for DSFM's adult learning centre, moving from Collège Louis-Riel
More room for adults to finish high school, learn new skills and train for in-demand careers
It'll also be the division's first building dedicated to hands-on career training.
Design work is just getting started, so there's no opening date yet. But somewhere in St. Boniface, the next great chef is already practising at home, and they'll finally have a place to learn, right in their own neighbourhood.
