Winnipeg Just Got a New Affordable Indoor Skatepark

For Winnipeg skateboarders, the first snowfall usually means putting the board away until spring.

But this winter, there’s finally somewhere to keep skating.

Pihtikwè Skatepark is a new indoor park downtown, built by the Manitoba Skateboarding Coalition and local skaters who wanted a place to ride year-round.

Here’s what to know:

  • Where it is: You’ll find it at 323 Portage Ave.

  • Who it’s for: All ages and skill levels are welcome, with after-school, family and open sessions.

  • How it works: Just drop in during open hours and skate at your own pace.

  • When it’s open: For now, it’s open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Even the name means something. Pihtikwè (pee-tih-kway) is Cree for “come in,” the kind of welcome you’d give someone at your front door.

That welcome goes for everyone. Indigenous skaters ride for free, and if money’s tight, staff will set you up with a small job around the park instead, because they never want cost to keep anyone off a board.

Mom, What Are We Doing For Halloween?

They've been asking since the first leaf fell.

You want it to be something special. Somewhere fun, a little different, the kind of night they'll still be talking about at school the next day. But between work, practices, and everything else, you just haven't figured out where yet.

And Halloween's coming fast.

Here's your answer. Witchy Wonderland is back at Red River Exhibition Park, all new this year, and it's built for exactly this.

Here's what's waiting for you:

  • Boo-Bounce, Winnipeg's largest inflatable park

  • Costumed characters roaming all night, photos and all

  • Fireworks on five different evenings

  • Real farm animals at the Hooves n' Howls Barnyard

One ticket covers almost all of it, $20 for ages 3 and up, free for kids 2 and under. And costumes are encouraged.

It opens October 22, less than two weeks away, and only runs nine days: October 22 to 25 and 29 to 31. After that, it's gone until next year.

So grab your tickets now. They work any day of the event, so you can pick your night later.

And the next time they ask, you'll finally have an answer.

📍 Red River Exhibition Park, 3977 Portage Ave

P.S. Send this to the parents in your group chat. The kids will have even more fun with their friends there too.

Manitoba Bisons Football Names Its First Female Captain in History

Maya Turner has been making Canadian university football history since she first stepped onto the field in Manitoba. And this fall, she added another chapter.

At the end of training camp, the 24-year-old kicker and punter was named one of the team’s seven captains, making her the first female captain in the Bisons’ 100 years of football.

And when you look at her record, it’s easy to see why:

  • 2022: She became the first woman to score in a U Sports preseason game.

  • 2023: She was the first woman to score in a regular-season game, then kicked the double-overtime winner that same day.

  • 2024: She was named a Canada West all-star, another first for a woman in U Sports football

Those firsts made headlines, but it’s how she shows up every day that made her a captain. Head coach Stan Pierre says she works hard, never makes excuses and sets the example for younger players.

The Bisons have one regular-season home game left, on Oct. 31. If you’ve been meaning to catch a game this fall, bring the family and come cheer them on.

A Last-Minute Goal Gives the Jets the Win

Now that’s how you finish a hockey game.

The Jets came home on a roll, and on Wednesday night, they kept it going right down to the final minute.

Tied 2-2 with the Colorado Avalanche and just one minute left on the clock, Kyle Connor buried a beautiful pass from Mark Scheifele to give Winnipeg a 3-2 win at Canada Life Centre.

And there was plenty more to cheer about:

  • Kyle Connor scored twice, including the last-minute winner

  • Stuart Skinner made 32 saves, earning his first home win as a Jet

  • Cole Perfetti scored his third goal of the season, continuing his strong start

The win brings the Jets to 3-0-1, with points in all four games so far. That final goal was also the 62nd time Connor and Scheifele have teamed up on a game-winner, the most of any duo in Jets history.

If you missed the game, or just want to relive that final minute, it’s worth another watch.

Winnipeg Jets Reveal New Jerseys for 2026 Heritage Classic

Source: NHL

The Jets are off to a strong start this season, and now they’ve given fans another reason to get excited.

The team has revealed its new jerseys for the 2026 NHL Heritage Classic, where they’ll face the Montreal Canadiens outdoors at Princess Auto Stadium on Oct. 25. And longtime Jets fans might recognize the look.

The new uniforms bring back a piece of Winnipeg’s hockey history:

  • The look: They’re classic white jerseys with blue shoulders, red trim and the original Jets logo from the 1970s and ’80s.

  • The details: Felt crests and stitching give them an old-school feel.

  • The hidden touch: “Honour the Past” is written inside the collar as a nod to the team’s roots.

The Canadiens are going retro too, with their familiar red jerseys and vintage cream details.

It’ll be a special sight on Oct. 25, with both teams skating outside in their throwback looks.

These Awards Celebrate Manitoba Seniors Who Never Slow Down

For many people, retirement means slowing down.

But plenty of Manitoba seniors are busier than ever, volunteering, helping neighbours and making their communities better. If someone in your life is one of them, here’s a chance to see them recognized.

Nominations are now open for the 2027 Manitoba Healthy Aging Awards, which celebrate Manitobans 65 and older who help other seniors stay healthy, active and connected.

There are four categories:

  • Older Adult of the Year: It honours seniors who speak up for better health care.

  • Healthy and Active Living Ambassador: It celebrates seniors who help others stay active.

  • Intergenerational Impact: It recognizes seniors who bring generations together.

  • Mental Wellness Champion: It honours seniors who support mental health.

Nominations close April 30, 2027, and winners will be honoured at the Legislative Building later that year.

So think about the neighbour, friend or family member who’s always giving back. They may not be slowing down anytime soon, but this is a chance to stop and thank them.

For The Hockey Fan Who Already Has Every Jersey

Every year it's the same problem. You know exactly who they cheer for. You just have no idea what to get them.

They've got the jersey. The hat. The mug, the scarf, and a bobblehead from three seasons ago.

So you end up at the mall on December 23rd, grabbing whatever's left and hoping they don't already own it.

This year, get them something they'll actually wear every day.

Golden Hand Jewellery carries officially licensed NHL jewellery, real pieces with their team's logo, made to be worn long after the season ends.

Why it makes the perfect gift:

  • Officially NHL licensed, so it's the real thing, not a knockoff

  • Comes with an authentic holographic collectible sticker, proof it's official

  • Something they don't already have sitting in a drawer

Here's the catch: some pieces are in stock, but others are special orders that take time. If you want it under the tree, now's the time to order.

Shop early, skip the December rush, and give them a gift they'll actually remember.
