Winnipeg’s Election Results Are In…
After weeks of lawn signs and debates, Winnipeg finally has its answer.
On Wednesday, voters re-elected Scott Gillingham as mayor, and the race for second place came down to less than a point.
Here's how the top three finished, based on the city's unofficial results:
Scott Gillingham won with 39.8 per cent of the vote.
Kevin Klein came second with 20.7 per cent.
Noah Redden finished a close third with 19.8 per cent.
For his second term, Gillingham says his first priority is a new plan to send community service workers, instead of police or paramedics, to some 911 calls, which could leave first responders more time for emergencies.
He also plans to:
Push for more detox and mental health beds.
Keep working to reduce homelessness.
Bring back some bus stops near seniors' homes.
He won't be doing it alone, though. Nine of our 15 councillors are new to the job, and your councillor is who you call about potholes, snow clearing and what's happening on your street.
From a record early vote to a council full of new faces, this was a big election for Winnipeg, and the city showed up for it.

The Winter Break Plan For Kids Who Can’t Sit Still
By day two of winter break, the kids have done every puzzle, built every fort and bounced off every wall in the house.
And it’s too cold to send them outside for long. So where does all that energy go?
Canlan Sports’ Winter Break Hockey Development Camp gives kids ages 6 to 12 a full day of hockey, friends, and somewhere fun to burn it all off.
Every camp day includes:
Three hours on the ice, with power skating, shooting, stickhandling and battle drills
Two hours on the indoor field for multi-sport games and running around
A hot lunch, so there’s nothing to pack in the morning
Coaches who keep it fun, so they’re excited to go back the next day
All skill levels are welcome, whether they already play on a team or are just learning to skate.
There are two camps over the break: December 22 and 23, and December 28, 29 and 30. Book one or both, and you’ll have up to five days covered while school’s out.
They’ll come home with tired legs, new skills, and stories they can’t wait to tell you. And you’ll get a few quiet afternoons back.
So pick your week and save their spot before the break starts.

Halloween Safety Tips for Winnipeg Families

Source: City of Winnipeg
The costumes are ready, the candy bowls are full, and the kids are already counting down the hours.
With Halloween tomorrow, the City of Winnipeg has shared a few reminders to keep our little trick-or-treaters safe:
Costumes: Add reflective tape or a glow stick so drivers can spot kids, and make sure masks don't block their view.
Trick-or-treating: Younger kids should go out with an adult, and older kids should stick to a planned route.
Crossing the street: Stick to intersections, keep an eye out for cars and carry a flashlight.
Decorations: Use a battery candle in your pumpkin, and keep your walkway clear for visitors.
Candy: Check treats before anyone digs in, especially for kids with allergies.
After that, the only thing left to worry about is how much candy gets eaten before bedtime.
The City’s full list also covers pumpkin carving, fireworks, and what to do with your jack-o’-lantern afterward, so it’s worth a quick look before tomorrow.

A New Path Into Mining Careers in Northern Manitoba
The best way to learn a job is usually just to do it, and that's the idea behind a new mining program in Northern Manitoba.
The federal government is investing $250,000 in a new Surveyor Assistant Program, which trains people to help measure and map land for mining projects.
Here’s how it works:
Students start with classes at the Northern Manitoba Mining Academy in Flin Flon.
From there, they head out on hands-on placements, including at active mine sites.
Placements are already lined up with Vale, Hudbay Minerals, Alamos Gold and Manitoba’s Highways Department.
Manitoba is home to 30 of the 34 minerals Canada considers critical, and this program is built to help northern residents go from training to a job in that industry, close to home.

Winnipeg Police Handed Out 639 Speeding Tickets
Every school day, kids across Winnipeg are walking, biking and hopping out of cars on their way to class.
To help keep them safe, Winnipeg police and MPI spent 20 days checking school zones during busy drop-off and pickup times. They handed out 639 tickets, including 523 for speeding.
The campaign may be over, but school zone speed limits still apply.
So here's a quick refresher:
30 km/h in posted reduced-speed school zones
7 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday to Friday
September through June, throughout the school year
A few extra seconds on your drive can help keep those little ones safe.
And with Halloween tomorrow, it's worth slowing down and keeping an extra eye out for kids in costumes too.
