Anyone who's seen a January gas bill knows what it costs to heat a house in our city. A new neighbourhood at the U of M is being built to do it a different way

Instead of natural gas, it'll run on geothermal, which pulls heat from underground to warm and cool buildings. At least 1,000 homes are expected to be on the system by 2028, and it'll be Manitoba's first large-scale geothermal district.

The province is putting up to $4 million behind it, which is what gets the system in the ground.

The neighbourhood is called Southwood Circle, an 80-acre community on the Fort Garry campus with condos, apartments and townhouses, plus up to 300,000 sq. ft. of shops and offices.

But Manitoba’s plans go well beyond this new neighbourhood

The province released its new Net Zero Action Plan this week, with more than $350 million in future funding behind 90 actions aimed at reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

The province plans to review and update the plan every year, and Manitobans will also have a chance to share their feedback.

Winnipeg was awarded a Northern Super League team back in July. Now our new professional women's club is getting something every team needs before that first whistle.

The new $8.5-million stadium is going up at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex on Waverley Street, giving the team a home built specifically for professional soccer.

It's expected to be ready for the club's first season in spring 2027.

There's also new FIFA-grade turf and upgraded lighting going into the complex, which will keep serving community soccer and other events.

In a few years you'll know some of these names. This weekend is the first look at them.

The Jets are heading to Quebec for the 2026 Prospect Challenge, where their young players go up against prospects from Montreal and Toronto.

And you won't have to wait long to see them. The Jets prospects face the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, Sept. 12 at noon, then the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday, Sept. 13 at noon.

If you know someone looking for an affordable home in Winnipeg right now, you’ve probably heard how tough the search can be.

That won’t change overnight, but approving more homes is one way the city is trying to ease some of that pressure. And the city just passed a housing milestone nearly three months ahead of schedule.

Winnipeg committed to approving 14,251 new homes by December. It's approved 14,833 since December 2023, with three months still to go.

Hitting the target also puts Winnipeg in line for another $32.6 million in federal funding, pending a final review in early 2027. That would bring the city's total to $126.5 million.

That money helps the city keep going, from affordable housing projects to faster approvals and the infrastructure new homes need.

But a permit isn't a home. Here's the part where things actually get built.

The province is investing up to $73 million to create 821 new homes, with 811 right here in Winnipeg and another 10 in Swan River.

They won't all be the same kind of housing, and that's on purpose. The plan covers people at different income levels, including Manitobans who need an affordable place to live and those who need extra support to stay housed.

Construction is expected to start in spring 2027, with everything finished by June 2029.

And the funding goes beyond building them. Of the $73 million, up to $51.7 million will help keep homes affordable and support residents over the long term.
