Winnipeg Sets an Early Voting Record (Plus What to Know Before Voting Day)

Winnipeg’s municipal election is two days away, and a lot of us didn’t wait.

A record 50,767 Winnipeggers voted early, up 21.2% from 2022. That’s nearly 9,000 more people than last time.

If you haven’t voted yet, your turn comes Wednesday, Oct. 28, when Winnipeg picks its next mayor, city councillors and school trustees. Not sure where you’re voting yet? It’s quick to check.

Once you’ve found it, here’s everything else you’ll need for Wednesday:

  • Polls are open from 8 AM to 8 PM.

  • Bring valid ID with your name and current address, plus your voter’s notice if you have it.

  • There are 12 mayoral candidates, 54 council candidates and more than 90 school trustee candidates.

Before you head out, it’s worth taking a few minutes to get to know the candidates in your ward and what they stand for. After all, they’ll be making decisions about our neighbourhoods, schools and city for years to come.

More than 50,000 Winnipeggers have already voted, and on Wednesday, the rest of us get our say.

P.S. Send this to your family and friends so they’re ready for Wednesday too.

Together with Modo Yoga!

The Easiest Way To Stay Active This Winter, 57% Off

In the summer, staying active almost happens on its own. Evening walks, bike rides, a weekend at the lake.

Then it gets cold. The walks get shorter, the bike goes in the garage, and the couch starts winning.

And by January, you’re starting all over again.

This year, keep it going. For the next 72 hours, Winnipeg Digest readers can get a 10-class pass to Modo Yoga for just $89. That’s 57% off.

Here’s how the math works out:

  • $8.90 a class, less than a takeout lunch

  • Share it with a friend, and it’s 5 classes each for $44.50

  • Buy as many passes as you want, for your partner, family or group chat

Each pass is good for 30 days, so it’s a full month of classes to use or share.

Here’s what you can try:

  • Hot Yoga, to warm up on cold mornings

  • Hot Pilates, for a real core workout

  • Flow and Yin, from moving fast to slowing all the way down

  • Strength and conditioning, when you want more of a workout

So send this to the friend who keeps saying they’ll try yoga with you, and grab your passes before the offer’s gone.

P.S. This offer is only here for a limited time, so share it with your friends and family before it’s gone.

Restaurant of the Week: Busan Korean BBQ

The Group Dinner Nobody Has to Plan

Every group has that dinner where nobody can agree on where to go. Someone’s craving beef, someone wants seafood and someone else just wants rice.

At Busan Korean BBQ, nobody has to agree. It’s all-you-can-eat for $39.99 per adult, and everyone can order exactly what they want.

The Pembina spot just reopened after three months of renovations. It has a fresh look and more tables, which is good news if you’re bringing a crowd.

Scan the QR code at your table, pick what you want and the servers will bring it over for you to grill. You get two hours, and you can keep ordering the whole time.

There’s something for everyone in the group:

  • Beef short ribs and rib-eye for the meat lovers

  • Pork belly in black pepper, spicy, garlic, or curry, so nobody has to settle on one flavour

  • Baby squid and bacon-wrapped enoki mushrooms for the friend who always orders something different

  • Cheese corn and kimchi pancakes for the whole table to share

  • A hot seafood pancake, gamjatang, or bibimbap for anyone who would rather let someone else do the grilling

If you’ve never tried Korean barbecue, this is the kind of meal that makes it easy, with good food, plenty to share and lots to talk about while everything cooks.

So pick a night, start the group chat and let the grill settle the “where should we eat?” debate for once.

City Updates

Manitoba Changes Rules for Private Messages Between Teachers and Students

Teachers can still talk to students about school. They just won’t be able to do it through private, unmonitored messages.

On Friday, the province told all publicly funded schools in Manitoba to update their rules around online communication between staff and students.

That means school staff can no longer:

  • Text students directly.

  • Message them through personal social media accounts.

  • Chat with them on private messaging apps.

There are a couple of exceptions, though:

  • If a student needs another way to stay in touch for safety, accessibility, well-being or learning, the school has to approve it first and let parents know.

  • Schools may also make an exception when a staff member and student are family or know each other outside school.

Families will hear about the changes from their own school. It all comes down to keeping conversations about school out in the open, where parents can see them too.

A Winnipeg Furniture Favourite Is Back Open After a Fire

For more than 30 years, Winnipeggers have been picking out couches and fridges at Dufresne on Nairn Avenue, until a fire closed the store in January.

Nine months later, it’s back. The store reopened on Saturday, ribbon-cutting and all.

And for Dufresne, getting this one back means a little more than most. Nairn was only the company’s second store when it opened in 1993, long before Dufresne grew to 15 locations across three provinces. It’s one of the stores that helped build the whole thing.

So if a new couch, mattress or fridge has been on your list since winter, Nairn’s ready for you again.

Connor Hellebuyck Gets Traded From the Jets

After weeks of waiting, Jets fans finally have their answer.

Connor Hellebuyck requested a trade in August and was suspended after missing training camp in September. Now, after 11 seasons in Winnipeg, he’s officially been traded to the New Jersey Devils.

Here's what the Jets got in return:

  • Dawson Mercer, a 24-year-old forward with 213 points over six NHL seasons

  • Alexander Command, an 18-year-old forward taken 12th overall in this year’s draft

  • Nick Bjugstad, a veteran forward, and Nico Daws, a 25-year-old goalie

  • Two draft picks, a second-rounder in 2029 and a seventh-rounder in 2027

For now, Stuart Skinner remains Winnipeg's starting goalie, and the team has some new faces to build around.

Hellebuyck leaves Winnipeg behind with three Vezina Trophies, a Hart Trophy and nearly every Jets goaltending record to his name.

It's the end of a big chapter in Winnipeg hockey, and the start of another one.

A Big Comeback Sends the Bombers to the Playoffs Again

Source: Blue Bombers

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers beat the B.C. Lions 34-10 on Friday night, locking up a playoff spot for the 10th straight season.

And it took quite the comeback to get there.

The Bombers were trailing 10-3 when Zach Collaros left the game with an injury late in the third quarter. That’s when Dru Brown stepped in and turned things around.

Here’s how the Bombers fought back:

  • Dru Brown completed all 11 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns.

  • Brady Oliveira rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns, including a huge 63-yard run that gave Winnipeg the lead.

  • The Bombers scored 31 unanswered points to finish the game!

It’s been an up-and-down season, but after a comeback like that, our boys are heading into the playoffs with plenty for Bombers fans to cheer about.
