Manitoba’s New Rent Rules Give Renters More Protection

A rent increase notice is never easy to open.

For some Manitoba renters, it was even worse. They were asked to start paying increases of up to $500 a month before the increase had even been approved.

That’s changing.

Starting now, renters don’t have to pay an above-guideline increase until the Residential Tenancy Branch, which reviews these requests, makes a decision.

It’s one of a few changes for renters:

  • When landlords pass on the cost of major upgrades, renters will now pay 40 per cent less than before.

  • The Renters Affordability Tax Credit is going up to $675.

  • They also go along with a change from earlier this year that raised the rent control limit to $2,000 a month, up from $1,670.

Renters can now wait for a decision before paying a cent more, which means a little more breathing room for a lot of Manitoba families.

If you rent, or someone you love does, the full announcement walks through what’s changing and when.

Winnipeg’s Fall Date List: 14 Ideas Beyond Dinner and a Movie

Fall is made for cozy plans, and Winnipeg has more of them than you might think.

So we rounded up 14 date ideas around the city, plus where to go for each one.

A few to get you started:

  • Make each other a piece of jewellery at Gem Studio on Corydon Ave.

  • Unwind together in the saunas and outdoor baths at Thermëa Spa Village.

  • Find out who’s more competitive over a new board game at Across the Board.

  • Paint pottery together at Crock A Doodle, then make a second date out of picking it up.

The other 10 are in the full list. Some are seasonal and only around this fall, while others work any time of year.

Dinner and a movie isn’t going anywhere. Save it for the nights you’re too tired to plan anything, and try something new while fall’s still here.

Our Favourite Viral Folk Fest Band Is Back in Winnipeg

If two musicians in giant papier-mâché masks showed up on your feed this year, you’ve already met Angine de Poitrine.

They’re a Quebec duo with no singer, just drums and layers of guitar and bass loops. The music is strange, catchy and surprisingly easy to dance to. Add polka-dot backdrops and those masks, and the whole show feels like stepping into a cartoon.

After a viral KEXP session in February, they played the Winnipeg Folk Festival this summer, where the crowd gave them a whole lot of love.

Now they’re back for two nights at the Burton Cummings Theatre:

  • The shows are Tuesday, April 6 and Wednesday, April 7, 2027.

  • Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 30 at 10 AM.

Whether you caught them at Folk Fest or only on your phone, this spring you can see them up close.

City Updates

Winnipeg’s Giant Hockey Cabin Is Almost Ready

In our last edition, we told you the NHL was turning Princess Auto Stadium into a giant cabin for the Heritage Classic. Now you can see it for yourself.

The rink is going up inside the log walls, with the stone fireplace across the front, and it’s already starting to look like a weekend at the lake.

The Jets play on it this Sunday at 6 PM against the Montreal Canadiens.

A Grammy-Winning Group’s Final Tour Is Coming To Winnipeg

They’ve won Grammys, toured the world, and sung together for 38 years. Now, New York Voices are taking their final bow.

Before they do, Winnipeg gets two chances to hear them live during their Grand Finale Tour.

Any one of them could carry a song on their own. Put all four together, and you get a sound no single singer can make.

This fall, you can hear that sound in person at the Berney Theatre at Rady JCC, 123 Doncaster St., Winnipeg.

Pick the one that fits your weekend:

  • Saturday, Oct. 31 at 8 p.m., a night out for anyone skipping the Halloween parties

  • Sunday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m., for anyone on trick-or-treat duty the night before

And if you’re under 30, there’s a special ticket price just for you.

The recordings will always be there to play again. But this is one of the last chances to sit in the room and hear those four voices together, live.

Two shows, and then that’s it. Grab the friend you always see concerts with, and see them live one last time.

P.S. Know a music lover who’d hate to miss this? Send it their way.
