Buying A Home In Winnipeg Just Got A Little Easier

If you’ve tried to buy a home here in the last few years, you know how it went.

You found the one. A 15-minute showing, an offer that same night, over asking, no inspection. And you still lost it.

Or you’re hunting for your first home, and everything you like is gone before you can see it.

So when someone at Thanksgiving dinner asks if you’re still looking, you change the subject.

This year, you might have a better answer.

Here’s what’s changed this fall:

  • More choice. More homes for sale than before the pandemic, so you’re picking, not settling.

  • Time to think it over. No more deciding in one afternoon like you would in spring.

  • Conditions are back. You can put an inspection on your offer again.

  • A roof you can actually see. Fall is your last chance to check the roof and yard before the snow.

Some homes still get multiple offers, but the market’s leaning your way for the first time in a while, and it should stay that way into winter.

Royal LePage Prime can help you make the most of it. With close to 200 local agents, each with their own neighbourhoods and experience, you can pick the one who fits you, whether it’s your first home or your forever one.

So when someone asks at dinner, you can finally say yes.

And if you have the budget, or just love a good look around, we just shared some of the most stunning homes for sale in Winnipeg this fall. Think heated garages, wine fridges and backyards the size of a park.

Restaurant of the Week: Sierra Cafe & Lounge

New Osborne Cafe Brings Coffee and Cocktails Under One Roof

You know how some places are perfect for a quick coffee, while others are where you go for cocktails, good food and a night out with friends?

Well, Sierra Café and Lounge on Osborne is bringing both under one roof.

During the day, you can stop in for an espresso and a breakfast sandwich. But come evening, the café turns into a lounge with craft cocktails, shareable plates and a supper club feel.

If you’re looking for something unique, the menu’s got a few special things you won’t find at your usual coffee shop, starting with a raw bar prepared by their own Japanese chef.

Here’s what caught our eye:

  • Hamachi Crudo: Japanese hamachi with jalapeño, clementine oil, and a fresh clementine ponzu

  • Steak Sushi: Striploin tucked into little sushi cones with shallot chimichurri

  • Garlic Focaccia: Made in-house and served with caramelized miso butter

There’s no shortage of drinks either. A couple of standouts are the Banana Espresso Martini, topped with banana cold foam, and the Oaxaca Choco-late, made with tequila, mezcal and crème de cacao.

So whether you’re meeting someone for a slow Sunday breakfast or catching up with friends over cocktails, Sierra has you covered. Come for the coffee one morning, and you might find yourself back that Friday night for drinks.

📍 160 Osborne St, Unit B
🕒 Open Tuesday to Sunday

Winnipeg’s Newest Polar Bear Cub Needs a Name (Voting Ends Tomorrow)

There's a new little face at Assiniboine Park Zoo, and Winnipeggers have until tomorrow to help choose his name.

The orphaned polar bear cub arrived from Churchill in August after losing his mother. He's spent the past few weeks getting comfortable with his caregivers, and he's finally ready for visitors.

Now comes the fun part. Students from Churchill helped pick four names that honour his northern home, and the final choice is up to us in an online vote.

Here are the choices:

  • Duke: After Churchill's Duke of Marlborough School.

  • Marly: Also honours the school and its students.

  • Fletcher: Named after Fletcher Lake in Wapusk National Park.

  • Mantayo: A Cree word meaning "strangers," connected to a Churchill river.

Voting closes tomorrow, Tuesday, October 13th, at 11:59 PM, so don't miss your chance to help name this little guy.

P.S. Share this with your family and friends so they can pick their favourite too!

A First Nations-Run College in Winnipeg Can Now Grant Degrees

Since 1984, Yellowquill University College has been teaching students at its home on Madison Street and in several First Nations communities. This month, it reached a milestone it’s been working toward for decades.

Yellowquill has always been run by First Nations, but Manitoba didn’t have a law that covered a school run that way. That meant it wasn’t officially recognized, which held it back from granting degrees and offering students more.

That changed on Oct. 1. A new provincial law made Yellowquill the first school owned and run by First Nations in Manitoba with full power to grant degrees.

Here’s what the new law changes:

  • Recognition: It’s now recognized alongside Manitoba’s other public universities and colleges.

  • Programs: It can expand the programs it offers students and communities.

  • Support: It can access the same supports other Manitoba schools already get.

And it can do all of that without giving up the culture-based learning at the heart of the school. It’s also open to everyone, including First Nations, Inuit, Métis and non-Indigenous students.

It’s a big step for Yellowquill, and an even bigger one for the students who come next.

A Heads Up If You’re Heading Out This Thanksgiving

If you’re hosting tonight, you’ve probably thought about everything: who’s bringing what, where everyone’s sitting, and whether there’s enough pie.

Here’s one more thing worth adding to the list: how everyone’s getting home.

Winnipeg Police are reminding everyone to plan their ride before the celebrating starts. If drinks are part of dinner, make sure there’s a designated driver, a cab on the way, or a couch ready for anyone who needs it.

A good host makes sure everyone leaves full and happy. A great one makes sure they get home safe too.

PS: Checkstops will be out around the city tonight to help keep everyone safe.

Get Your Christmas Shopping Done Early, With 300+ Local Makers

Every December, Christmas shopping somehow ends up last minute.

It’s the 19th, the mall parking lot is full, and you’re standing in front of a wall of gift cards. Or it’s 11pm and you’re paying for rush shipping on Amazon for something you’ve never seen in person.

This year, the best gift shopping of the season happens in October, and every dollar stays local.

Scattered Seeds is back for two weekends, with more than 300 local makers between them. It’s Manitoba’s longest-running local craft market, and most makers sell their own work.

  • Pottery, jewellery, candles and clothing you won’t find at the mall

  • More than 150 makers each weekend, and a completely different group the second weekend

  • Kids 12 and under get in free, and a free craft bar keeps them busy while you shop

  • Cocktails and mocktails from Boots & Banter, so it feels like a day out, not an errand

One weekend is $10 online, or $12 at the door. The $15 pass, online only, covers both weekends. Five more dollars gets you all 300 makers instead of half.

And because you’re part of our community, code WPGDIGEST20 takes another 20% off. That brings the pass down to $12, which is what everyone else pays at the door for one weekend.

Two full weekends for less than one movie ticket.

Grab your pass now, and get your Christmas shopping done before the first snow.
